About koulourakia

What are koulourakia?

Koulourakia are traditional Greek butter cookies, rolled by hand into twists, braids and rings. Greek families bake them during Holy Week for Easter, but they're eaten all year, usually with a cup of coffee or tea. They're only lightly sweet, which makes them perfect for dunking.

How do you say koulourakia?

koo-loo-RAHK-yah. One cookie is a koulouraki (koo-loo-RAH-kee).

About our cookies

Who makes Elona cookies?

We're a family-run company in Campbell, California. Every cookie starts with a recipe from our Yiayia (grandmother), Antonia Komianos, who moved from Greece to the United States in 1961. We bake everything ourselves in our commercial kitchen in Campbell, and every pouch carries full nutrition and allergen labeling. Read our story.

What flavors do you make?

Four:

  • Butter: our original, the classic koulouraki with butter and vanilla.

  • Chocolate: the same recipe with cocoa.

  • Cinnamon: made with olive oil, orange and cinnamon, and vegan.

  • Baklava Bites: small honey-walnut cookies with cinnamon and cloves, inspired by Yiayia's baklava.

You can also get Butter, Chocolate and Cinnamon together in The Koulouraki Trio, or Butter and Baklava Bites in the Butter & Baklava Bundle.

What's in them?

Short, simple ingredient lists. Our Butter koulourakia, for example, are flour, cane sugar, butter, eggs, milk, baking powder and vanilla. Each product page lists the full ingredients and allergens.

Are any of your cookies vegan?

Yes, our Cinnamon koulourakia. They're made with olive oil and orange juice instead of butter and eggs. Our other three cookies contain butter and eggs, and the Baklava Bites also contain honey.

Do your cookies contain nuts?

Only the Baklava Bites, which contain walnuts. All four cookies are baked in the same kitchen, so if you have a serious nut allergy, please email us before you order.

Are your cookies gluten-free?

No. All four are made with wheat flour.

How long do they stay fresh?

Nine months from the day we bake them. They're packed in foil-lined pouches that keep moisture out.
